When sport
diving first
became popular
in Southern
California, the
County of Los
Angeles
Department of
Parks and
Recreation
recognized the
need for
qualified
underwater
instructors.
This need was
determined by
lifesaving
professionals
whose foresight
initiated the
concept of
training
instructors to
competently
teach proper and
safe practices
in SCUBA diving.
The instructor
training course
was created and
implemented to
promote safe and
qualified
instruction
which would
provide a
standard for the
entire diving
industry. Thus,
in 1954 the
first
Underwater
Instructors
Certification
Course
(UICC) began.
Since 1954 there
has been
practically one
