When sport diving first became popular in Southern California, the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation recognized the need for qualified underwater instructors. This need was determined by lifesaving professionals whose foresight initiated the concept of training instructors to competently teach proper and safe practices in SCUBA diving.

The instructor training course was created and implemented to promote safe and qualified instruction which would provide a standard for the entire diving industry. Thus, in 1954 the first Underwater Instructors Certification Course (UICC) began. Since 1954 there has been practically one Underwater Instructors Certification Courses offered each year with few exceptions and the graduates’ number in the thousands.

Los Angeles County Instructors have established an outstanding record of competency and stand as a symbol of excellence in the diving community. Active instructors with a national recognized agency have the opportunity to cross certify and become a Los Angeles County Underwater Instructor.

The Advanced Diver Program (ADP) is a renowned program in which the diving community is offered an opportunity to improve their basic knowledge and skills while diving under close supervision along the Southern California coast.
