In 2000, the
High Energy for
At risk Teens
(HEAT) Program
was looking for
something
innovative to
add to their
water based
activity
programs. They
wanted to expand
the program from
skin diving but
the additional
risk and
training
required for
SCUBA diving was
out of reach.
Discussions
emerged about
somehow
combining the
two activities
into something
called "Scuba
Air Snorkeling"
or SAS
for short.
Equipment was
researched and
standards were
developed with
the help and
expertise of the
Los Angeles
County
Underwater
Instructors
Association.
The equipment
that was
assembled gave
an experience of
SCUBA while
having the
safety of skin
diving.
Participants
would breathe
from regulators
and scuba
cylinders but
the specially
designed
buoyancy
compensators
constructed of
floatation foam
would prevent
the user from
submerging.
The program that
has emerged from
this innovation
provides kids
with two days of
pool instruction
followed by an
excursion to the
ocean for the
ultimate
experience.

video
presentation

2002 SAS
Program
and the
Paul Meister SAS
Program.
