The Need for More Training
After the
formation of the UICC (Underwater Instructor
Certification Course) in 1954, Los Angeles Angeles
County now had several Underwater Instructors training
and certifying members of the general public as basic
scuba divers. As the numbers of newly certified
divers grew, so did the need for ongoing and specialized
and ongoing training for these newly certified divers.

In the early 1960's under the direction of Clint Degn
(05UICC)
and Vince Van Detta (07UICC), Los Angeles County introduced a
multi-specialty Advanced Diver Seminar to keep basic
course graduates diving. This became known as ADP,
the Advanced Diver Program with the first official class
graduating in 1964.
Enrollments in ADP would often
exceed 100 divers for the three month long annual
course. Content in the early ADP courses consisted
of Oceanography and Marine Life, Underwater Photography,
Physics, Equipment, Skill Development, CPR and First
Aid, Rescue, Search and Recovery and Altitude
Diving.

Education Through
Innovation
ADP was the forerunner of the Advanced Specialty Courses
later adopted and implemented by all the National
training agencies of the time, once again setting Los
Angeles County as the innovator of scuba diving
education.
To this day, the Los Angeles County Advanced Diver
Program is revered at the most comprehensive and
thorough recreational diver training program available
in the world. |
