Information about Los Angeles County's Advanced Diver Program

  ADP Origins
Basic scuba divers emerge from their certification courses with questions and reservations about their diving future, regardless of how well they are trained. Legitimate questions about who to dive with, where to dive and what to do on a dive are almost universal.

A diver's reservations about lack of experience often cause the otherwise enthusiastic diver to put off that first dive for weeks, months or even years...sometimes forever.  To reduce in number those who simply "drop out" of diving, the Los Angeles County Underwater Unit developed the Advanced Diver Program..

Learn Correct Beach Diving Skills

It offers training in those specialty areas a basic class cannot cover; introduces divers to other divers an today's diving leaders. It educates an trains divers to and advanced level where they can stand out as examples to the rest of the diving world. It is our challenge to recognize and fulfill the vital needs of the certified diver

  The Program
Every summer Los Angeles County offers an intensive diving program that spans approximately 10 weeks for the development of divers to a more competent status. Participants are exposed to many facets of diving curriculum including deep diving, wreck diving, night diving, commercial diving, underwater photography and much more.

The Los Angeles County Advanced Diver Program is 100 hours+ of formal training, both in lectures and water work. Lectures cover specialty areas of diving activity plus in-depth coverage of diving fundamentals. For a basic certified diver, the Advanced Diver Program offers a more comprehensive training in Skin and Scuba skills than can be taught in a Basic Course and improves diving fitness.

Build Confidence   Learn High Surf Entries   Develop Teamwork

The program also includes lectures in practical oceanography, diving medicine and physics from some of the most respected and experienced professionals in the diving industry. Dive excursions are planned for every weekend of the course and include some multi-day commitments.

For the experienced diver, the Advanced Diver Program offers the opportunity to expand knowledge, learn the latest techniques, improve skills, and be introduced to new diving areas and buddies. The Advanced Diver Program is truly the finest diver education program of its kind.

The Advanced Diver Program, unlike most diving classes you may have participated in, is composed of a large number of divers who are divided into smaller groups called dive teams. Each dive team has a qualified Senior Dive Master, who will personally conduct the water work training which is planned in advance by the Advanced Diver Program Coordinator and Staff.

Graduates of this program should be comfortable in any diving situation normally experienced on our Southern California coastline. Novice divers with some practical experience are invited to apply, along with more experienced divers wishing to refine and expand their skills.

  Certifications
Upon successfully completing the Advanced Diver Program you will be awarded the Los Angeles County Advanced Diver card, a symbol now marking your recreational diving expertise.  In addition to Los Angeles County certification, graduates will also earn the Master Diver certification from NAUI.

Advanced Diver Card

Participants in ADP can also receive the NAUI Rescue Diver and Nitrox Diver certifications during the program.  These optional certifications are subject to additional fees for the course workbooks and certification cards.
