A Column
Dedicated to
What's Happening
at LACS!
November 2009
For those of you
that read my
last article I
hope the
takeaway was
that I was
definitely back
in the saddle so
to speak with
the website and
the various
other
operational
duties I have
regarding our
organization.
With that being
said I wish
someone had
given me a drift
line to grab
onto because it
has been a VERY
busy couple of
weeks!
I have been
involved with
lots of changes
to the site over
the last two
weeks, some that
are live now and
some that will
be going live as
they near
completion and
testing.
Here are a few
of the
enhancements we
have made:
LACS
SERVER
We have several
volunteers
helping us in
many areas of
the organization
from web
development,
marketing,
program
development,
bookings, etc.
We started to
suffer some
growing pains
and duplicity of
work because
everyone was
working
independently
sometimes on the
same material.
With that in
mind the
decision was
made to acquire
a file server to
act as a central
repository of
data, images,
documentation
and record
keeping.
This server is
now online and
is backed up
each night for
safe keeping.
Now we have the
ability for
those
individuals
working on
projects to work
collaboratively
and more
efficiently as
well.
EMAIL
SYSTEM
When we launched
lacountyscuba.com
we used the
Internet
Provider's POP3
email system
which worked
okay. It
as most POP3
systems have
limitations, we
quickly realized
the need for
expanded
capabilities.
With the launch
of our internal
file server we
also launched a
Microsoft
Exchange email
server to
replace the
ISP's POP3
server.
After a few
bumps in the
road we got the
server online
last week and I
am happy to
report all is
working well.
In addition to
the email server
we have
installed
enterprise class
virus protection
for the email as
well as
contracting with
Postini (now
owned by Google)
for world class
anti-spam
protection.
Email can be
accessed via a
web portal or by
using Microsoft
Outlook 2003 or
higher. We
will be
providing LACS
email accounts
to all active
status and
alumni status
members that
renew there
certifications
each year.
I encourage
everyone to take
advantage of
that "perk",
it's well worth
it.
GENERAL
UPDATES
We are coming up
on our first
year anniversary
of launching
www.lacountyscuba.com
and are
continually
making
enhancements to
the look and
feel of the site
as well as
working on
cleaning up
areas that had
incorrect or
inaccurate
information.
As you are
aware,
LACS is
now the sole
custodian of all
of the former
Underwater
Unit's records
dating back to
the very
beginning.
As we have been
methodically
reviewing and
organizing all
the original
files we came
across a
remarkable
discovery....rosters
for ADP!
Now
unfortunately
they are not
complete and
there are gaps
between the
programs.
What we found is
better than what
we had and we
have now been
able to digitize
those rosters
and add them to
the site!
I would like to
acknowledge
Kevin Curtice,
a recent
graduate of
ADP 2009
who helped us by
MANUALLY typing
every
ADP
Roster we found
into Word so we
could import it
into the
site...great
job!
Please visit our
ADP
Rosters
section and take
a look for
yourself...way
cool!
Well, that is
all I can talk
about for now,
but I can
promise more
enhancements as
the weeks go by!
As always, if
you wish
to contact me,
feel free to
email me at
jcanfield@lacountyscuba.com,
I promise to get
back to everyone
that emails me.
My
Best Wishes to
Everyone
