In 1953 scuba diving was in its infancy.  Newspaper accounts of the time reflect a truly frightening if often inaccurate picture of the dawn of recreational diving.  It was a time of trial and error learning with frequent tragic results.  It was an era of home made scuba equipment and a four page instruction manual.  It was during this time that the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation launched its first Underwater Instructor Certification Course (UICC).

The first three courses lasted only 20 hours; 4UICC grew to 32 hours; 5UICC grew to 50 hours; and today 50 plus years later, the Los Angeles County UICC leads with approximately 200 hours extended over a three month period of weekend training.  More than 250,000 safe divers have received certified instruction from the 1100+ L.A. County Instructors trained since 1954.

This website is dedicated to the history, tradition and the ongoing diver educational programs offered by the County of Los Angeles Underwater Unit.  We welcome you to look around and see where diving education got its start...

57 UICC is underway!  The program officially kicked off last weekend (January 9-10, 2010) at Victoria Park in Carson, California.  This year we have four Instructor candidates along with something new....an AI Candidate!  In the rich spirit and tradition of the Los Angeles County Underwater Programs we are introducing an Assistant Instructor course as a launch pad training opportunity to prepare oneself for a future UICC.

Here are some highlights from the past weekend:

It's that time of the year again...time to renew your Los Angeles County Underwater Instructor Certification for 2010!  As a reminder, the Department of Parks and Recreation no longer processes Renewals and Re-certifications.

LA County Scuba has been tasked with that responsibility and we have made things easier by allowing you to pay online at our eStore.  You can mail in payment to our address if that is more convenient for you.

Renewals for 2010 come in the usual two flavors...ACTIVE and ALUMNI.  If you are currently teaching Scuba and wish to maintain ACTIVE level status, please visit our Active Status Renewal page here for a list of requirements.

If you are no longer teaching Scuba you can renew at the ALUMNI level by visiting our Alumni Status Renewal page here.

Regardless of which method you choose for payment (online or mail), you will still be required to complete the annual re-certification application.  Applications can be downloaded from our website from the links listed above.  You can email the application to us or send it via regular mail with your payment.

If you have any questions, you can call us at (323) 726-2155 or email renewals@lacountyscuba.com for more information.

What do these two pictures have in common?
